Absolutely killer line up. champagnepeters to start. Linear, intense, bright, fun approachable style of #Champagne #LuisSeabra #XistoCru #Branco was what most of burgundy wishes to be, but doesn't quite hit. Minerality holding up stone fruit and a rich less driven palate. Fantastic quality for the price and something to potentially keep for 5 to 10 years. #Barolo blow out between giacomofenocchio Vs #Marcarini #Bussia had more of the brick and rose petal affect while #Brunate had an intense bramble note in the back. Much more intense fruit and the age helped it soften up quite a bit. I personally liked the Brunate a lot more. A stunning bottle everything considered. The surprise of the night was how smooth and pleasant the #2012 #Othello from #ChristianMoueix showed. Very smooth, smoky rich fruit that balanced the big napa side of things with the slight greenness on rich fruit. Napa Valley: mystique or overwhelm? Driving up “the 5”during my first visit to Napa with friends in the late ‘90s, I recall feeling a heady excitement mixed with a sense of intimidation. The latter sense of overwhelm, although calmed by the warmth and welcoming spirit we received through the next 3 days, never really left me. We set our home base at a cozy bed and breakfast in Calistoga. Visits to silveroakcellars (when they still offered their logo engraved, wood pepper mills), josephphelps ,and a handful of others ensued. The iconic grandeur and tranquil beauty of Opus One was also not to be missed. Walking into each tasting room when that magical essence of the wine and oak intermingling hit, was subtle and seductive. Like the chardonnay, cabernet sauvignon, or zinfandel they were serving, each tasting room ambience gave off its own depth of personality and evolving character. Our own Napa Valley map has kept a certain classic look through the years, but we recently gave it a little crowning touch and change with a new title cartouche. Twenty years later, Napa still evokes a level of mystique and overwhelm. The depth and complexity of the terroir and wine are part of me. Discover the source! Black forest cherry, damp tobacco, silky cassis. Blackberry puree, potting soil, creamy dark plum. Eucalyptus and garden mint, vanilla extract and mocha latte. Melted dark chocolate emerges with substantial power and authority, dripping decadently over ripe blueberries and black currant preserve as crushed violet and cinnamon simultaneously impart sensual aromatic lift. Clove, nutmeg, and pretty baking spices continue to radiate from the rich fruit-driven core complimented by licorice and warm espresso. Damp earth and clay make their presence felt through a soft, supple, silken texture that creates an impression of sipping crushed velvet on the palate. Overtly sexy and hedonistic yet remarkably well balanced; done up with just the right amount of plush ripeness and new oak. Full bodied with thick chewy tannin and medium acidity. This 2014 "Forte" by Trinchero Napa Valley is an unabashedly gorgeous and delicious Malbec-based Bordeaux blend. . Malbec was once a major components of many of the most famous wines of Bordeaux, but this noble grape largely fell out of favor after phylloxera's devastation of Europe due to its inability to easily graft to foreign rootstocks. It has since found new life as the flagship red variety of Argentina where it produces full bodied and fleshy wines that are often dark in color and packed with ripe and succulent fruit. This bottling, crafted by Trinchero using primarily Malbec plus a bit of Cab Franc/Petite Verdot/Merlot sourced from around Napa Valley, is an outstanding example of this grape's immense potential in California. This wine's silky mouth-filling fruit and pronounced yet agreeable tannin are irresistible and inviting, and it manages to maintain excellent complexity and depth within its sensual opulence. Diverse group of wines consumed last evening. Started with the 2007 Sanguis Las Mujeres (GSM). Such a blending masterpiece. Cherry notes and sweet tobacco dominated on entry, Syrah kicked in mid palate with peppery depth. Next up was the 2015 Torrin Banshee (Syrah dominant GSM). Black and blue fruit, celery seed, sage and white pepper. Fantastic expression of Paso Robles wine. Lastly the 2017 Theorem Merlot Diamond Mountain. One of the best ‘17’s you will find coming out of Napa at this young age. Cocoa, cassis and mild oak all inside a velvety mouthfeel. Beef tenderloin with a Cabernet reduction and cambazola toast on the Napa Valley Wine Train. On this day, a few years ago I took the Wine Train up the valley. Even though my sister-in-law lives in Napa, she accompanied me. The train is a great way to see the Napa Valley from a different perspective. It was December and all the vineyards were golden. Among the impressive gang of top Burgundies for lunch, 2010 Harlan still stand out and with its brooding fruit, ginormous structure and immense potential, abundant sweet cassis, dark liquorice, graphite, clove/nutmeg mix and whiffs of smoky tobacco.
