Seasonal depression is a real thing for us Northerners. Connecting with my loved ones, taking my vitamins and staying as active / positive as possible is keeping me somewhat sane in these dark cold months🥶☔️🌃. Morning, Monday! ☀️Many simple health issues can be resolved just by drinking enough water and getting enough sunshine. ^ How do you know if you’re drinking enough water?💦 A quick check (for generally healthy folks in tropical or warm weather): rub your lips together. They should feel smooth and supple. If you feel a little bit of dry skin, you need more water. (Chapped lips can also be due to windy winter weather, irritation from saliva, vitamin deficiencies and other ailments.) Also check your urine color. If the color is dark yellow or especially brownish yellow, you need to drink up. Most folks need about 2L of water daily, but if you like to be precise and do calculations: 🤓 A person would need 30-40mL of water for every kg of body weight. Example: a person weighing 50 kg (110 lbs) would need 1.5-2L of water per day. ^ How do you know you’re getting enough Vitamin D for the day? ☀️ Go out in direct sunlight (cloudy days won’t do it), then go back indoors about half way before you get sunburnt, or go out for as long as you can without getting sunburnt. Sun exposure time varies depending on time of day and how dark your skin is. The longer your shadow (eg. Early morning or late afternoon), the longer you can stay exposed. The darker your skin, the more sunlight you need. Vitamin D is the only nutrient you can get from a non-food source, and it’s totally free while enjoying the outdoors. 😎 #betterwithleynee #healthtips #water #vitaminD

We have hit 40 degrees plus more times than I care to remember this month and it is only the 9th day. 🙀⁠ ⁠ But do we fear it too much? ☀️⁠ ⁠ Moderate sun exposure has proven to benefit your health, including increase levels of Vitamin D, stronger bones, better sleep, improved mood, improve skin conditions (psoriasis, eczema) and a healthier immune system.⁠ ⁠ It is recommended you up to 15 mins of sun exposure to as much of your skin as practical (don't go getting arrested for indicent exposure 🤣😂) before 9am or after 4pm in summer.⁠ ⁠ ❓ Should you up your exposure?

F A J I T A S for people who can’t cook good 👩‍🍳 ••• Chicken or beef Capsicum Onion Paprika Salt & pepper Coriander Lime Mini tortillas Optional; Avocado Sour cream or Greek yoghurt Hot sauce ••• Cook onions and capsicum up in a pan with some extra virgin olive oil. Add paprika and lots of salt & pepper! I did my steak after my veggies - a few minutes on each side et voilà 👌 ••• Heat up your tortillas and then serve it buffet-style. Guac and hot sauce for next level flavour 🤤🔥

Both sleep and stress management are foundational aspects of health and there is no exception when it comes to immunity. Poor sleep and high stress both impact the immune system in negative ways. You’ve likely experienced a time in your life when you weren’t sleeping well, stress was high and you ended up sick, possibly even with the flu, as a result. When it comes to prevention and supporting your body during flu season, make sleep a priority. We call this ‘sleep hygiene.’ This means setting a bedtime and sticking to it as routine is something your body truly needs. We like to tell our patients to use their bed for sleep and sex only. If sleep doesn’t come easy to you or you have insomnia, creating a relaxing bedtime routine that includes winding down without screen time along with ensuring your room temperature is around 67 degrees Fahrenheit can help. If insomnia is a big struggle we recommend Alpha Stim, an FDA approved device for the treatment of insomnia, anxiety and depression. Another way to regulate your sleep is to focus on melatonin. Give yourself some time during the early morning to get natural sunlight in order to trigger the necessary circadian rhythms that keep you awake and alert during the day and feel drowsy and tired in the evening. Stress can depress the immune system and also negatively impact the microbiome. I know that we can’t always control what happens in our lives, but there is likely some stress on your plate that you can let go of or shift your mindset around. We try and get a minimum of two hours outdoors daily unless the weather is terrible. Happy Monday and welcome to a new week and a new topic on Subha's Farmacy! 🌞💊 Last week we covered a lot of sun-packed information and naturally, when we think of the sun we also think about vitamin D. I got a lot of questions about how to get enough vitamin D without basking in the sun and so here we are! * Sources of Vitamin D: Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is naturally present in very few foods as Vitamin D2 and is produced in humans when UV-B rays hit the skin and trigger Vitamin D3 synthesis. Vitamin D plays a role in regulating blood levels of calcium, magnesium and phosphorous. It’s an essential vitamin for the growth and health of our bones because it helps absorb calcium and supports the growth and maintenance of the skeleton. But how do we get vitamin D from the sun without the harmful effects on our skin? In Australia, the main source of vitamin D is from exposure to sunlight, but the amount of sun exposure required to produce adequate levels of vitamin D is relatively low. We need to balance the need for sun exposure for vitamin D, while at the same time avoiding the risk of skin damage (which we learnt all about last week!). Even still, many Australians do not have adequate vitamin D levels, especially during winter. Sun exposure times will vary based on the season, location in Australia and skin type and amount of skin exposed. Summer: mid-morning, mid-afternoon are the best times to get some sun exposure, outside peak UV times. In summer, most Aussies will maintain adequate vitamin D levels just doing typical day-to-day outdoor activities. Sunscreen is a must, especially when the UV index is above 3 and other sun protection measures if you are outdoors for more than a few minutes (SLIP, SLOP, SLAP, SEEK and SLIDE) Winter: longer exposure times around midday are ideal. Usually the UV index stays below 3 in winter and autumn but sun protection doesn't hurt. Stay tuned this week for more information on sources of vitamin D, what vitamin D does and how it works in the body, signs of symptoms of vitamin D deficiency, who's at risk of being low in vitamin D and supplementation of vitamin D.

Wenn das Leben dir eine 🍋 gibt, gebe eine Limette zurück 😉 Ich probiere zur Zeit zusätzlich zu meinen Schilddrüsenmedikamenten ein homöopathisches Mittel für bzw. gegen meine #hashimotothyroiditis aus ☝🏻 Ich bin gespannt ob es mir Besserung bringt. Ebenfalls nehme ich wieder subkutan B12 zu mir. Dazu kommt auch noch Vitamin D. Ein neues Rezept habe ich bei meinem 👨🏻‍⚕️ noch nicht abgeholt - mein Tag hat einfach zu wenig Stunden 🤷🏼‍♀️ Ich versuche morgen anzurufen und dabei gleich noch ein Termin zur Blutabnahme zu vereinbaren. Beim Gynäkologen, Augen- und Hautarzt müsste ich auch endlich mal einen Termin machen ☝🏻 Morgen muss ich unbedingt mal meine Wohnung aufräumen und gründlich putzen 🍋 Noch ein Geburtstagsgeschenk kaufen und versenden. In my general clinic one of the questions I ask as part of my initial assessment is ‘do they take a multivitamin’. But why is it so important? ❤️ Vitamin D is really important in growing children as it helps them absorb and use the calcium in their diet. It’s also vital for building strong bones, teeth and muscles! A lack of vitamin D can lead to bone deformities such as rickets. ❤️ Vitamin A is needed to support rapid growth and to build their immune system to help combat infections. It also helps their vision in dim light. ❤️ Vitamin C helps support the immune system and aids the absorption of iron. Parents need to make sure try at if their child is taking different supplements at the same time that they are not exceeding their daily requirement.
